Mo/Me:
Spirit of Failure
Empathy
Distortion
Illusionary Weakness
Resurection
Rebirth
Res Signet/Physical Resistance
Signet of Capture/Healing Breeze
Illusion: 3
Domination: 12
Inspiration: 12
Cast IW before steping on stones. Step on 2 then wait til full health. Step on last stone.
Cast Empathy then Spirit of Failure
Then use distortion.
Continue to use distortion until you are down to 10 energy or doppleganger dies.
Distortion allows you to evade 75% of the time. But will cost you energy to do so. Spirit of Failure will cause it to miss 25% of the time, but will give you energy each time it misses. IW is there for you healing and its sacrifice (it can kill itself when it uses it).
Empathy of course is there to do the damage. DO NOT ATTACK!

Question, what is your armor and what is your level?
I ascended my second monk (long story) at level 12 just a few days ago. I used the following:
Breeze
Banish
Bane Sig
Smite
Holy Wrath
Retribution
Blessed Sig
Blessed Aura
Put up Holy Wrath and Retribution as soon as you spawn, then just before I went across the third tile I put up breeze and hit blessed sig for energy boost.
The Doppelganger will cast blessed aura first which waste just a few seconds for me to hit him with Banish, Bane and Smite. Use Blessed sig and hit breeze again and start wanding him. Not much damage as I used Kepkhet's Refuge to boost energy, but it did enough. Just about as I'm and he is dead Bane sig is ready for the final blow.
Jumped from level 12 to 17 in one shot.
Oh yeah my armor was level 51.

Max points in Domination and Illusion, and if you want some Inspiration as well Take only Distortion and Empathy, and perhaps Spirit of Failure. Cast these spells on the Ganger and wait for him to obliterate himself. Unless you're incredibly unlucky and he hits through Distortion most of the time, he'll die before you do. Illusion of Weakness might work too (as the Doppleganger will cast it).

Assuming that you have 55 skills and balth aura, this works:
PS
Breeze
Balth Aura
SoW
Zealot's Fire
Blessed Sig
Balth Spirit
Blessed Aura
-Also works without 55hp and below 20, my current speed record is around 9-10 seconds.
EDIT: You'll have to use PS and breeze in melee with him for extra damage from ZF if you wanna kill him. Basicall cast everything but Balth Aura and SoW before the last rock, Balth in the room and get in melee, then drop SoW. He'll still be casting enchantments, keep chasing him if he runs and spam for ZF damage.

Apart from the Stingray Strand crafter that does 57 armour (not headgear) for monks, eles, mesmers and necros only.

Ascending is easy with practically any class, as long as you understand how the doppleganger works.
It uses the same skills you have equipped, although I think it's attributes may be different. Thus, don't bring skills you don't want it to use against you.
Unlike a human player, the doppleganger is not smart enough to create a viable strategy using a random group of skills. Therefore, it uses most skills seemingly at random. Enchantments and spirits will usually be cast at the beginning of combat if they are equipped.
With these points in mind, building a strategy to kill the doppleganger is simple. Take skills that are not useful to the doppleganger and which have long cast times. For a Mo/Me, you should load up your entire bar with high cast time enchantments that provide no real benefit, like Balthazar Spirit, Essence Bond, Life Attunement, Blessed Aura, etc. When you enter the fight, the dopple will start casting these spells. Just wand it to death while it casts.

For my monk I did it with lots of spammable, useless skills and backfire in my skill bar, of which I only cast the latter. The Doppleganger was dead and gone in ~10 seconds.
When I did it with my bf's monk (he asked me to) this wouldn't work for some reason, so I just kept casting healing breeze (which dopple doesn't use for healing) and wanded him to death. :S
Took some more time than the first method but it worked well.

This just occurred to me (might be difficult to do with the att pts that you have)-
Empathy-all remaining points
Distortion-enough illusion so that you lose 2e when he misses
Spirit of Failure-enough for at least +2e when he misses
Healing Breeze-enough points for maybe 5 regen at mose
He won't be able to hit you with distortion up, Spirit of Failure will give you enough energy when he misses that you won't be drained from distortion, and Empathy will do a good amount of damage to him. Healing Breeze is there in case you do actually get hit.
For this I would reccomend that you hex him at range and then close to melee (less damage from him b/c he hits hard with his axe, and he takes more dmg b/c of faster attack speed from the axe).
Fight should be over very fast.
@Irukandji- it didn't work the second time b/c they updated mob AI, they now won't kill themselves through backfire. You would need both backfire *and* empathy to kill him.

Backfire, Healing breeze, shatter hex, Bane signet, Prot Spirit.
Worked for me, two days ago.
Backfire, run up, shatter hex when he casts backfire on you, and then prot/HB and bane signet when he runs low on health from backfire.
I beat 'em in about 13 seconds.

Banish + Healing Breeze.
The AI only use regen skills like HB to combat health degen, so your mirror self wont use it at all; which gives you the edge.
Really, you guys over think this.

I liked my build better, but it works with Mo/Me
Shatter Enchantment
Backfire
Orison
Reversal of Fortune
Vigerous Spirit
Healing Breeze
12 Domination
and keep all of your other attribute points unspent
Frist, cast backfire.
watch him kill himself
if you must, finish him off with Shatter Enchantment
Dont even heal at all, the onyl two skill you will actually use is Backfire and Shatter Enchantment
Dead in about.. 15 seconds =D
PS: Don't 55 it, you need as little attributes in healing and as much hp you can get

u guys are making it more complicated than need be.
i just did it last week with my lvl 8 monk.
first buy a decent armor.
then all you need is...
retribution
reversal of fortune
life attunement
and put as much as u can on smiting and protection prayers
Before u step on the stones put on retribution. Once u get in the battle just keep using reversal of fortune and take like a rod or something to do a lil more damage. DONT USE LIFE ATTUNEMENT. He will use this and do less damage to you.

Distortion to avoid most attacks, bane signet to knock him down while attacking, retribution and holy wrath to reflect damage
